About Linda JackAbout me I am not a typical career politician. I have experience of the real world, having worked in agriculture, defence, teaching, youth and community work, and the financial sector. As an active trade unionist I have fought for and supported many people, representing members at a regional and national level. Whether it is by campaigning against the war in Iraq or working as a trustee of a charity that supports the Arab citizens of Israel I am committed to human rights, civil liberties and peace. I am as comfortable chatting to a young person on the street corner as I am challenging a government minister in Whitehall. I am tenacious and not easily intimidated. I will fight for what I believe in. More importantly I will fight to ensure your voice is heard in Parliament. Early life Born in Luton, the eldest of five, I was hugely influenced by my father who taught me the importance of a commitment to serving my community and my country. The Army I joined the army aged 17 and served in Germany, Northern Ireland and at GCHQ. Teaching and youth work I have been a teacher and youth worker and have managed part of the Youth Service in Bedfordshire. Trade union activist I have been active in the trade union Unison holding positions at the local and national level. Politics and public service I've campaigned and worked for the Liberal Democrats at a local and national level. I am also involved with two charities. I am the Youth Policy Adviser at the Financial Services Authority. Financial Services Authority Linda says: I am a Liberal Democrat because I believe in our values - only our party can deliver a fairer, more equal society, where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. My commitment to politics comes from a life of public service, a belief that things can be better and a desire to really change things. Elections round here are a straight fight between the Liberal Democrats and Conservatives. Labour can't winLabour don't win here. Labour are always bottom of the poll around here. There are no Labour councillors elected in Central Bedfordshire. The Lib Dems will take action to protect vital frontline NHS services. The Lib Dem differenceWe will put more police on patrol, restore the pensions' earnings link and deliver fair pay for the armed forces. We can make these pledges because we have identified real savings to pay for it. We are the only party with a plan to balance the country's books after the recession. The days of uncosted political wish lists are over - even if other parties haven't realsed it yet!
