Henry Vann has endorsed a report by the National Union of Students (NUS) launched on 3rd September criticising the rising costs of University for students. Fri 5th Sep 2008: Bedford Borough Council has performed a dramatic U-turn over its plans for a 270-home housing development on the site of Mowsbury Golf Course. The proposals have been withdrawn just two weeks after being submitted as part of the process of allocating sites for development in the Borough between now and 2021. Local Liberal Democrats have welcomed the news after fighting a vigorous campaign against the plans. With Council plans for unnecessary and damaging developments at various other key sites still in place, the Lib Dems have vowed to fight on to prevent harmful overdevelopment in Bedford Borough. Thu 4th Sep 2008: Demand for Council to Come Clean over Mowsbury Golf Course Development Plans. The council's plans to turn Mowsbury Golf Course into a 270-home housing estate are surrounded by a fog of confusion as conflicting messages emerge from the Town Hall. Liberal Democrat opposition to the plans was met with a response by the Council in the pages of the Bedfordshire on Sunday which stated that the Golf Course site was included in error amongst 21 sites proposed by the council for development. However, Putnoe Ward Councillors have received a letter from the Council which contradicts this message directly, and Liberal Democrats are demanding that the Council comes clean over its intentions for the site. Wed 3rd Sep 2008: Relief for Bowlers as Priory Club is Reprieved. A controversial proposal to close Bedford Priory Bowling Club has been shelved by the council following strong opposition. With 66 paid up members, Bedford Priory Bowling Club has the highest membership of any of the Bedford Borough Council Bowling Clubs. Sun 31st Aug 2008: Bedford Borough Council is proposing to release vast areas of publicly-owned land across the borough for housing and commercial development. Following the news of controversial plans for housing developments on Mowsbury Park Golf Course and at Jackman's Farm, Brickhill, the Liberal Democrats have now revealed the full extent of the Council's proposals for new residential and commercial developments to appear at various sites across the Borough in both urban and rural areas. Fri 29th Aug 2008: The abolition of the charge that Bedford Borough Council has forced upon residents paying their council tax bills at the post office since 2006 has moved a step closer after the Mayor bowed to pressure and declared his support for a review of the policy. Thu 28th Aug 2008: Henry Vann congratulates Bedford students on GCSE results. Last week, students across Bedford received their GCSE results. Tue 26th Aug 2008: Mowsbury Golf Course & Rugby Club Lined Up for Housing. Putnoe Liberal Democrat councillors have reacted angrily to proposals from the Council that seek to turn a large part of Mowsbury Golf Course and the Wentworth Drive Athletic Rugby Ground into housing. Mon 25th Aug 2008: Action on Unauthorised Encampments to go Ahead. Following the appearance of large numbers of unauthorised encampments across Bedford over the past year, the Lib Dems have campaigned for effective action to protect council land in the most vulnerable areas. The Liberal Democrats first proposed to the council's Corporate and Resource Committee in November last year that £40,000 be spent on physical protection of public spaces from unauthorised encampments, for instance, using barriers and bunds. Fri 22nd Aug 2008: New Housing Developments proposed for Brickhill. Liberal Democrat Councillors have expressed their total opposition to proposals made by the Borough Council for three areas of major new housing development in Brickhill. Green fields around Brickhill could be set to disappear under proposals by Bedford Borough Council to submit council land for residential development. Large areas of green fields at Freemans Common and Jackmans Farm have been identified as land owned by the Council which is suitable for development before 2021. The resulting building schemes could see hundreds more homes being built. Mon 18th Aug 2008: New plans to tackle knife crime will not be introduced to Bedfordshire according to an announcement by the Labour government. Sat 9th Aug 2008: Call for Demolition of 'Tinderbox' Factory Building. Following the 18th fire in just six years at the former Forrester Foods factory in Dallas Road, Kempston, Bedford Borough Liberal Democrats have called for the site to be pulled down. Fri 8th Aug 2008: "Prison overcrowding in Bedford a stain on John Howard's name" says Henry Vann. Bedford Prison is the eleventh most overcrowded prison in the country according to a report by the Prison Reform Trust. Tue 5th Aug 2008: "Government wrong to force super clinics on Bedford" says Henry Vann. People in Bedford are happy with their personalised, local GP healthcare according to a new Healthcare Commission report. "Knife crime on our doorstep" says Lib Dem parliamentary campaigner.
