The Liberal Democrats today welcomed Ofwat's £20.3m fine of Southern Water for 'deliberately misreporting information' about its performance. Commenting, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, Chris Huhne MP said:

"Southern Water lied to the regulator and ripped off their customers in the process. Had they not come clean about it, this record fine would have been substantially higher.

"At least Southern Water consumers will now see their water bills reduced next year to reflect overcharging since 1999.

"After the fines against Southern, Thames, and Severn Trent Water, Ofwat must now conduct an urgent investigation to ensure other water companies have not been producing misleading records for shareholder gain."
