Tories Veto Plans for Weekly Summer Collections

11.08.24pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 28th Sep 2006

Nigel Aldis

Councillor Nigel Aldis

Mid Beds District Council voted tonight on Lib Dem proposals to introduce weekly collections of residual waste in the summer months. An amendment was tabled to trial weekly collection of kitchen waste in selected areas, which was passed instead of the original motion. Whilst this move is very welcome, it will not tackle maggots, flies and smells for most of us next year. It is also dependant on agreement from the Executive and the winning of a government grant. Lib Dem environment spokesman Nigel Aldis said "We really wanted to ensure that residents did not suffer again next summer. Whilst we wholly welcome the prospect of kitchen waste being collected weekly and recycled, we deplore the fact that most residents will certainly have another summer of rubbish misery".
